AMD announced a slew of new mobile graphics processor parts at its AMD Financial Analyst Day, but the major announcement has to be that the next generation Radeon flagship graphics card will come with high-bandwidth memory (HBM) which is considered by the faster than GDDR5 memory.
AMD CTO, Mark Papermaster claimed that AMD has been working on HBM for the last 7 years. In fact, AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su has confirmed that the next generation AMD flagship cards will be out by the end of this quarter (ie. by end of June) and they will sport HBM.
High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) was proposed as an industry standard back in 2010. HBM uses stacked DRAM memory in order to extract a higher memory bandwidth speed (higher than GDDR5) while keeping the power consumption under check. According toPapermaster, HBM offers a three-fold improvement in performance per watt compared to GDDR5, and a 50-percent increase in power savings.
Power saving is just one aspect of using HBM. According to Lisa Su, since HBM is on-die rather memory than on card, it can lead to a lot of interesting form factor graphics cards.
While we wait for AMD to release its next gen Radeon graphics cards sporting HBM, alleged images of the R9 390X have already leaked out. According to WCCF tech, the rumoured R9 390X will be running a Fiji XT powered water cooled graphics card. The card features black, red, silver colour scheme and it will come with a 120mm water-cooling raditor.
